Sonic, hypnotic and atmospheric are words that come to mind when thinking of Austin, TX’s latest offspring, The Gloria Record. A rock band in the arena-sense, they show equal understanding and mastery of both atmosphere and songwriting, filling rooms with lush arrangements and melodies to hum for days to follow.
The Gloria Record formed in 1997, with Chris Simpson and Jeremy Gomez, friends since high school, casually making music with Brian Hubbard and Matt Hammon, two more longtime friends. Fostered by their admiration for bands with big visions and bombastic sounds-such as U2, Radiohead, and REM-they abandoned any expectations, aspiring simply to make music that sounded fresh to their own ears. Regardless of their intentions, they soon found themselves with an impressive batch of songs and, after their first live show, an enthusiastic buzz. In 1998 The Gloria Record released their debut single (“Grace, The Snow Is Here”), followed by a self-titled EP, both on crank! A RECORD COMPANY.
The next year and a half saw numerous lineup changes. In August 1998, Ben Houtman joined the band on piano, organs, and synthesizers, adding more texture to their already grandiose sound. Matt Hammon, the drummer on The Gloria Record (1998) was replaced with Jeremy Tappero for touring. In spite of a revolving drum seat, TGR managed to complete two US tours before setting on Brian Malone as the drummer for A Lull In Traffic (1999). The band continues to tour and release records.
